Awakening reflects on the gradual process by which an idea becomes a realization. Thoughts and awareness grow gradually, gathering strength over time.
An area of the gallery floor is covered edge-to-edge by a dense field of darkly colored emu eggs. Hidden within each egg are vibration motors and internal light sources. Seemingly at random, they individually vibrate and jitter. At first, the room appears almost dormant, animated only by random quivering distributed across the surface like nervous energy moving through a body.
Over time, however, the system evolves. After repeated cycles of vibration, individual motors gradually rupture their shells from within, hatching through the surface of the eggs. As each shell breaks open, light escapes from the interior, introducing new points of illumination into the darkened field. What begins as a sea of trembling forms gradually transforms into a constellation of fractured vessels emitting light.
Each egg becomes an analogue for thought waking up, for internal change becoming outwardly visible. What begins as subtle, restless movement gradually transforms the field through fracture and light. The growing accumulation of broken, glowing eggs suggests awakening not as a sudden moment, but as a slow and collective process of emergence.
