In this fully digital piece, I’ve combined imagery and sound to illustrate the raw beauty of static. While I see a number of important metaphors within static, I focus on static as a pre-manifestation state of physical reality. In order to do so, I’ve layered and augmented field recordings created specifically for this project.
Through an assemblage of Software Defined Radio (SDR), self-made radio circuitry, and searches for number stations, I’ve collected an array of visual and audio content—some naturally static, and some altered to mimic it.
The audio includes recordings of birds, captured using an home-made FM radio transmitter attached to a bird feeder, which was then received through an SDR on my computer. I applied various filters and effects to devolve the sounds, transforming them into static-like textures. While fully digital, this piece is a close relative to the materiality of my physical paintings.
